England bowl out Sri Lanka for 95 to open Super 8 campaign in style

England kick-started their T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 campaign with a statement 51-run victory over hosts Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Despite being restricted to a modest total of 146/9, England’s bowling attack, led by a clinical spell from Will Jacks, proved too much for the Sri Lankan batters, who collapsed for just 95 runs in 16.4 overs.

The match began with Sri Lanka winning the toss and electing to field, a decision that initially seemed inspired. The home side's spinners, led by Dunith Wellalage (3/26), strangled the England top order. Apart from a defiant 62 from Phil Salt, the English lineup struggled to find any rhythm on a surface that offered significant turn. Captain Harry Brook and Jos Buttler both fell cheaply, leaving England at a precarious 68/4 at the halfway mark. Late cameos from Will Jacks (21) and Jamie Overton (10*) eventually pushed the score to 146, a total many felt was 15–20 runs short of par.

However, the second innings told a completely different story as England’s bowlers exploited the conditions with precision. Jofra Archer set the tone by dismissing Pathum Nissanka in the opening over, but it was the introduction of Will Jacks that turned the game into a rout. The off-spinner tore through the heart of the Sri Lankan top order, claiming 3/22, including two wickets in two balls to leave the hosts reeling at 34/5 by the end of the powerplay.

Sri Lanka’s middle order offered little resistance against the relentless pressure. Former captain Dasun Shanaka was the lone bright spot for the hosts, scoring a gritty 30, but he lacked support as wickets tumbled at the other end. England's spin duo of Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson combined to clean up the tail, with Rashid fittingly taking the final wicket to seal the dominant win.

With this victory, England moves to the top of Group 2 in the Super 8s, gaining a significant net run-rate boost. For Sri Lanka, the defeat is a major blow to their semi-final aspirations, leaving them with no margin for error in their upcoming fixtures against Pakistan and New Zealand.
